What the essay checker looks for

  • Grammar and spelling. Subject-verb agreement, their / there / they’re, affect / effect, missing words, wrong tense.
  • Punctuation. Comma splices, missing commas after introductory phrases, stray apostrophes.
  • Clarity. Sentences that are hard to follow, vague pronouns, ideas that need one more step of explanation.
  • Wordiness. Repetition and filler such as "very very", "in order to" and "the fact that".
  • AI-sounding phrases. Words and patterns that make writing read as machine-made: moreover, delve, it is important to note, in conclusion, heavy use of em dashes.

The checker suggests; you decide. It does not rewrite your whole essay or change your argument. When you want the whole text to sound more natural, use the Essay Humanizer.

Who uses an essay checker

  • High school and college students. A last pass before handing in, especially on essays written the night before.
  • Writers whose first language is not English. The essay checker catches articles, prepositions and word order that a spell checker misses. Spanish and Portuguese essays get feedback in their own language.
  • Students who used AI for a first draft. It shows the phrases that still sound machine-made, so you can rewrite them in your own words.
  • Tutors and parents. A quick list of issues to talk through with the student, instead of rewriting the essay for them.

What the essay checker does not do

  • It does not grade your essay. It looks at language, clarity and AI-sounding phrasing, not at whether your thesis is convincing or your structure meets the rubric.
  • It does not check facts or sources. Open each citation yourself and make sure it says what your essay claims.
  • It does not check plagiarism or give an AI score. A plagiarism check is planned. For a detector score, use the AI Detector.
  • It can be wrong. Suggestions are generated by AI, so read each one. A sentence it flags may be exactly what you meant, especially in quotations or creative writing.

A quick self-edit checklist

  • Does your introduction state a clear thesis in one or two sentences?
  • Does each paragraph open with a point and support it with evidence?
  • Have you explained why each piece of evidence matters, not just quoted it?
  • Is every source cited in the style your instructor asked for?
  • Does the conclusion add something, such as implications, instead of repeating the introduction?
  • Have you read it out loud once? Your ear catches what your eyes skip.
