9 edits that make AI text sound human
- 1. Cut the stock phrases. “In today’s fast-paced world”, “it’s important to note”, “plays a crucial role”. Delete them or use a plain word. Our list of AI words to avoid has 65 with replacements.
- 2. Vary sentence length. Follow two long sentences with a short one. This changes the rhythm more than any synonym.
- 3. Swap general claims for specific ones. “Many studies show” becomes the study you actually read; “various benefits” becomes the one that matters. Only add details that are true.
- 4. Add what only you know. Your opinion, an experience, why the topic matters to you, a source you read. This is what makes writing yours, and no tool can supply it.
- 5. Break the patterns. Lists of three, “it’s not X, it’s Y”, and a summary sentence closing every paragraph.
- 6. Use plain words. “Use”, not “utilize”. In a blog post or email, contractions like “don’t” help; in academic writing, keep the formal register and cut the filler instead.
- 7. Let paragraphs differ. A one-sentence paragraph next to a longer one. Not every paragraph needs a topic sentence and a recap.
- 8. Fix the punctuation tells. An em dash in every paragraph, frequent semicolons and a colon before every list. Use commas and full stops.
- 9. Read it aloud. If you would not say it, rewrite it. Your ear catches what your eye skips.
Before and after
In today’s fast-paced world, time management plays a crucial role in academic success. It is important to note that students who effectively manage their time are more likely to achieve their goals. Moreover, effective time management fosters a healthy work-life balance, reduces stress, and enhances overall well-being.
Time management has a big effect on grades. Students who plan their week are more likely to reach their goals, and they tend to feel less stressed and keep a better balance between study and the rest of life. I learned this the hard way: in my first semester I started every essay the night before.
Edited by hand with edits 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6. The last sentence is the writer’s own experience; a tool cannot add that for you, and it should never make one up.
Let a humanizer do the mechanical part
Edits 1, 2, 5, 6, 7 and 8 are mechanical, and the humanizer at the top of this page does them in one pass. It removes stock phrases, varies sentence length and structure, and follows the mode you choose (Academic, Casual or Professional) while keeping your facts, numbers, citations, links and quotations exactly as written. Every run is checked against your original. Edits 3, 4 and 9 are still yours.
Prompting ChatGPT to sound human
You can ask the model for a more natural draft from the start: “Write in plain English for [reader]. Vary sentence length. Avoid stock phrases such as delve, crucial and it’s important to note. No summary sentence at the end of paragraphs. No em dashes. Do not add facts, numbers or examples I did not give you.”
Two limits. Models drift back to their habits after a few paragraphs, and the harder you push for a casual voice, the more they invent details to fill it. In our test, several popular humanizers added 6 to 10 claims per text that were not in the original. Compare the result with your draft before you use it.
What not to do
- Deliberate typos or odd words. Readers notice, and the work looks careless.
- Synonym swappers. Replacing words one by one keeps the AI structure and produces strange phrasing.
- Promises of “100% undetectable”. Detectors change and disagree, so no tool can honestly promise a result.
- Text you have not read. Check that every fact, number and name is still right before you use it.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make AI text sound more human?+
Cut stock phrases, vary sentence length, swap general claims for specific true ones, add your own view and experience, break patterns like lists of three, and read it aloud. Or paste it into a humanizer for the mechanical edits and add your own details after.
Is there an AI that can make my writing sound more human?+
Yes. AI humanizers rewrite rhythm and wording while keeping the meaning. AI Humanizer does it for free, 1,000 words per run with no sign-up, in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
How can I humanize AI text for free?+
By hand with the 9 edits on this page, or with the free humanizer at the top: 1,000 words per run and 2,000 words a day without an account.
How do I humanize AI text by myself?+
Work through the edits in order: remove stock phrases, vary sentence length, make claims specific, add your own view, break repeated patterns, use plain words, let paragraphs differ, fix punctuation and read it aloud.
Will these edits make my text pass AI detectors?+
They often help, because detectors look at rhythm and predictability, but nothing can guarantee a result. In our tests, changing sentence rhythm and structure mattered far more than swapping words.
Will humanizing change my meaning?+
It should not. Our humanizer keeps facts, numbers, names, citations and quotations and checks every run against your original. Whatever you use, read the result against your draft.
Is it OK to use AI-written text for school or work?+
That depends on the rules where you study or work. Many allow AI help with editing but not submitting AI-written work as your own. Follow the policy and disclose AI assistance when asked.
